"I Wanna Rock With You.."

I can't believe the news of Michael Jackson. He was the King of Pop. Regardless of his personal life for me, it was all about the music. Always. I never stopped being a fan. I have been rocking out to the Thriller album since 1980 and he is a regular on my playlist even to this day. Good music is good music.


I usually do the Music Memoirs Five on Friday on Fridays but today I think I will go with some very special memories I have about the King of Pop.

Growing up, music was always super important. It was apart of our lives everyday and encouraged upon. My mother always had music playing and singing was apart of all of our lives.

With this stated, Here it goes:

-The first record I ever remember owning and playing over and over was Michael Jackson's Thriller. I remember opening the huge flaps to that fold out of Michael in his white suit with the white tiger and I remember moving the record needle back to play PYT over and over and over again.

-My grandpa and I would watch scary movies all the time together. When I was very, very young I remember sitting on his bed looking through the TV Guide to find upcoming scary films. I found one and it said Thriller after the title. I didn't understand that thriller meant that a film was scary. I thought that this meant that the network would show the Thriller video by Michael Jackson before the movie. I was so excited. I watched and waited for several of the promised "Thriller" because I thought that video was the coolest thing on earth! Sadly, it never came on. :)

-Watching the Say, Say, Say video and falling in love with both boys (Who didn't have a crush on a Beatle at some point?)

-In middle school, winning runner up on a radio show contest when I sang a Michael Jackson tune- I'll Be There

- My brudder, who is seven years younger, discovering MJ and going through the phase of finding music. Him and I watching Moonwalker 800 times!

-Hearing Who's Loving You for the first time. It was on a sampler cassette tape and they only played the first 30 seconds of each song from a Jackson 5 album. I got goose bumps at the power and feeling of Michael's voice in the beginning of this song- "When I, had you.......I treated you bad...." I eventually heard the whole tune and it was and still remains one of my favourite songs of all time.

-Of my three years of serving at Chili's through college I would often make random mixed cds for my co-workers in the back to listen to at night during clean up. There was always a rando MJ song included and they would always laugh that I still rocked out to MJ. My manager, Kevin then began to sing The Way You Make Me Feel to me, every time we worked together. He even danced a little and always added my name to the song to make it mine <3>

-While driving to Annapolis to look at engagement rings I was playing a mix cd of only MJ. I had it blaring way too loud and I was rocking out to Beat It with a fierceness. Hubs told me then, and he still stands by this statement: I am the only person who still rocks out to MJ without shame.
Hell yeahs!

-I was heavily involved with music and DJ sets during my wedding and during a consult with the DJ I made a list that was a MUST PLAY during the wedding. Billie Jean and I Wanna Rock With You were on this list. I remember both dances vividly :)

So those are just a few. Sad news. Rest in Peace.


At Least I Can Laugh At Myself...

That is the plus side to all this. This morning was, yet again, more proof that I am clumsy. Like a bull in a china shop.

Let me paint this canvas for you. I have such a long commute to work the first thing I normally do after arriving at work is go to my desk and put my stuff down and then stop by the loo to give my face a splash of water and fix my out of control hair. So, this morning was no different than any other. I dropped my lunch box off at my desk and walked to the loo on the other side of the building.

This is the only working loo with a mirror currently in my office. They are doing construction and remodeling so everything is just disheveled here. When I open the door to go in the side of my scrub top got caught on a jagged piece of the latch to the door. Instead of me gingerly trying to unsnag myself I start violently pulling and what do you think happens?

Yes.

My shirt rips. Right up the side to the bottom of my bra. I gasped. What the hell should I do? I have my Jimmy jacket at my desk left there from winter but, keep in mind I would have to walk on the other side of my building, passing tons of folk I work with with a frayed shirt, looking like I just stepped out of a bar fight or off of prostitution avenue. I decide that I will just quickly leave and go to my local Walmart to purchase another scrub top. The loo I was in was also conveniently located by the employee exit. Thankfully, this morning I took my book bag with me to the loo so I had my wallet and keys handy. I ran out to my car and called my friend from work to tell her to inform my boss what had happened. Everyone appears to know and realize that I have a hard time avoiding accidents so upon telling boss, there was massive laughter. Good to know.

Meanwhile, I arrive at Walmart. I am clutching my shirt together at the side and I immediately go for the clothing which is conveniently located at the front of the store. I grab the first item and put it under my arm, as if I'm holding it there, but really I am using it as a shield. I then walk to the scrub section and I have to rummage through the ridiculous printed scrubs ( I don't like those, hearts and looney tunes business..just give me a solid colour folks). As I am doing this a lady comes up to ask me where she can find lawn and garden. I politely told her I was not employed at Walmart. Five minutes later, two other ladies had asked me the same thing. Apparently the Waldorf Walmart allows their employees to wear California Blue scrubs to work??? I don't know. If I saw me, I wouldn't think Walmart employee. I would think..hmm, she probably works in a hospital of sorts....but oh well.

In route to the counter another lady shouts: "Excuse me" from the middle of the clothing section. Assuming she thinks I work there I just keep going. She then starts running after me and saying: "Excuse me, I am speaking to you and I need to know if you have any more of these" (holding a shirt). At this point my politeness has left. I turned and said: "I don't work here lady, back off". After finally reaching my haven up front at register I had to lose the shield shirt and clutching the side of my ripped scrubs I hand the lady my item.

IT DOESN'T HAVE A TAG.

Why??? Basically, I explained that I had a bit of bad luck that morning so could she just help me out. She quickly rang me up as $15.00. Works for me.

Thankfully, upon changing in the bathroom and leaving to go back to work I had no incidents. Alas, the day is young.


I Just Work Here..

I can't take it much longer. I have to complain. My new "office" has my desk facing the back of a giant copy machine/fax/scanner. It is a high traffic area. When someone goes to this machine, because my desk faces its back, guess who is in their direct line of vision?? ME.


I feel like the old lady greeter at W@lmart. It's redick. I try to concentrate on my work and keep my eyes on my computer screen but I am interrupted by folk at the copy machine. It's always idle chitty chat. After the sixth visit in the past hour to the copier, you really need not speak to me. There is no pre-req here.


Since I am also tech savvy and just happen to be so close if there is an issue with this machine I get twenty questions on how to fix it. Gah! GET LOST FOLKS!!

The only plus side to all of this is the ever entertaining Frigid Air, strategically placed in the corner. It is one of those that appears to open from the Left, like most refrigerators, only it opens from the Right. The schoomzy, oozy, pharm reps that come in to sample are constantly fighting with this thing. They pull and prod and lean back with all their might to open it, then eventually ask me if there is a key to open it. I usually just reply: "Yes, the key is to: just pull from the other side".

Never ceases to amaze, yet never fails to entertain folks.

And Now For Something Completely Different...

So I was asked to make my first cake today for sale. Usually when I am comissioned for a craft I include a card with my logo on it and contact info in case that person wants to pass it on. I have a logo for crafts that I have printed on three different stamps. It's really cute and started as a gift that my friend in NY picked up in a discount bin. It says: A Little Something creating a ring and my sig is in the middle. Like so:





























For baking, I was thinking of having a different logo. I want something cute but not redick. Plain, but unique. Yes, I am picky. The cool thing here is that my maiden name was Penny SWEET.

Manic Monday!

Do you usually wear perfume/cologne? If so, what's your current favorite?
Yes, I have three that I love, love, love. Ralph Lauren Blue for Women, Gap Grass, and Dazzling by Estee Lauder.
Right now I am wearing Grass by Gap since it's more of a spring/summery scent. They don't make it anymore so I have to order it.

What's the last book you've read that you thought was really good? If you don't have one, what looks promising on your to-be-read list? Right now I am re-reading Harry Potter 6 and 7. Even better than the first time through. The last book I read that was amazing was Edgar Sawtelle. Just beautiful that book! My to-be-read list consists of: Shatter by Michael Robotham (it was number one on Stephen Kings must read list) and I am going to re-read Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane because it's been awhile and Scorsese has just made a film version of it with Leo, set to release in October.

I Have Issues...

I'm so frustrated with folks this week. I am so sick of "one uppers". Those folks who know someone who does it better, or feel that they can do it better. What happened to just being happy for someone just because?? This is such a foreign concept these days. It's one of those weeks where I would just be better off alone.

It's been an odd day to top this off. It was raining cats and dogs. Hubs lost his wallet. It ended up getting washed with his khakis. I was sitting at a stop light and BAM. I was hit. From behind. I was pushed forward quite a bit. I was a bit shocked. So after a minute or two I exited my vehicle and walked towards my rear bumper to survey the damage. The lady (mid thirties, bad lipstick and haircut, old car) shot me a dirty look. Didn't move. After looking at the bumper, which thankfully, had nothing on it, not even a scratch, I walked towards the ladies car. She put her window down halfway and said a very sarcastic: "Hi"

What she was really saying was: "what do you want from me?"
I say: "HI, You just hit my fucking car".
Yes, I used the eff word. I was a little miffed at her piercing looks.

GET THIS...She then says to me:
"Well it's wet out".



Wow, lady. Sorry. I am mistaken. It is wet out. You are excused and free to ram into as many folks as you would like. JACKHOLE.


WTF?? What is wrong with people?
After this ridiculousness I stopped at 711 because I was in need of the Strong Brew and some M&M's. They were out of lids. Problem number one. I slipped when going to the counter. While exiting a man from a construction working truck yelled something at me and howled.



What does this mean? Do men actually howl at women?? I really, really, really need to stop going to 711. I am serious. Something bad always happens.



Mind your manners folks...and I will mind mine.



Practice Cake Three! Hearts, Zig Zag and Filling!

I baked another practice cake today. We couldn't finish our rainbow cakes in class. It was rushed because the other four people in the class were unprepared. No one read the book, no one brought any supplies so the majority of the time was spent loaning out or passing out Ashley and my own supplies to the others and the instructor baby-ing a 12 year old that likes Ace of Cakes and wanted to take the class to learn. First lesson 12 year old, BRING YOUR SUPPLIES.


So, with this, my rainbow cake was sloppy and rushed. I wanted to work on the new stuff I learned last night so I made a cake with hearts on it so I could practice the zig zag, dots and star tip techniques. This is also the first cake I cut, created a dam and filled. It came out wonderful so I am pretty excited!

Star Cake!

My Very First Practice Cake!

My first practice cake. Just for fun. I took a template design of The White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland and used piping gel to transfer it onto a butter recipe yellow cake.
I noticed a few errors while finishing my first cake.

Number One/A: I need to work on the crumb bit while icing.
Number Two/B: Do NOT over fill parchment bags
Number Three/C: Do not use black piping gel for the transfer..stick with clear and then redraw it. The extra step will make for a better presentation.

Things to keep with: Blue prints and planning. Always good.

Life Lessons

A few life lessons read at a very lovely womans retirement party I attended this evening.

TPS Reports

Today has been insane.

It is currently 3:00 pm. I have just now got to sit at my desk. I have been packing, unpacking, moving, networking computers, adding printers, figuring out wires and storage, and trying to complete my own job duties as well.

Today was the big "move" in my office. They are doing construction on my side of the building so they had to temporarily move me and my two co-pilots. Only there really isn't anywhere to put us. We are not in some random storage place at the front of the building. I am crammed perpendicular (it's math..look it up) to Amber. I have a copy/fax/scanner machine pushed against the front of my desk. What was once a walk way on the left of my desk is now a file cabinet that can not be opened because my desk is blocking it and it's so large it is virtually impossible to slink through. This sits in front of a giant closet that cannot be opened.




I had no electrical outlet for my computer and scanner. I had to McGuyver two power strips to make this happen. The right side of my desk is a fire hazard (Who runs OSHA here??? Oh, wait! I do..). To the front of me I have two giant storage shelves with medical supplies on them and a Frigid Aire that houses injections and medications.
We are supposed to have another door at the second entrance of this room but it is missing so every five seconds someone stops in. To see the hub bub...and ask incredibly stupid questions like: "Sooooo, you moved?"


Ummm..Yuppers.
Or
"Wow, you need a door here".

Yes. To keep you ass hats OUT.

I have heard a viscous rumor that when we do get our door that there is no ventilation in here so it's going to get hot. My favourite.

So I am just in a prime location. Everyone wants to visit due to the fax/copy machine and the hub bub. I keep telling myself: Be thankful I have a job with this economy today but surely, this is nuts.

The bigger fun bag is that supposedly I get to move somewhere else in two months. Another five hour job.

I'm In Love...

Cake Class Session One was last night. As promised, Amber and I got some grub at the Chick Fil-A and then headed over to class. I felt like we learned so much stuff in two short hours that my brain was going to pop! Thankfully I took notes and we were given a workbook. We went over the three types of icing: it's uses and preparation, colouring icing, how to level/tort a cake, proper baking methods, how to create a dam and add filling to a cake, proper icing procedures to insure no crumbs and a clean canvas for decor,trimming and smoothing icing, parchment paper bags, proper handling and angles of decor bags and homework and supplies for next week.


If this sounds like a lot..it's because it is! Next week Amber and I are to come to class with a baked cake already iced a light blue. Plus a batch of icing to practice the Rose with and to decorate our light blue cakes. We are doing a rainbow cake. They had a sample picture of this cake in the book and when the instructor announced this I looked over to see Amber convulsing with excitement in her chair. It was pretty hilarious. We are both like kids in a candy shop going to this.

After class we went on a shopping spree for all kinds of supplies and goodies. I had an excellent excuse to purchase some tools for baking that I have always wanted but never really had a valid excuse to buy. Like a leveler and a cake wheel. I also picked up some the Wilton's Cake Release that was recommended by my cake buddy.

All in all we were both pretty excited and can't wait to get started practicing and playing with the piping and designs. The only downside to any of this: In two weeks I am to make a CLOWN cake. Wowzas folks. The instructor said if it creeped me out too much I could make a headless clown cake. I explained that this would be far more creepy than a regular clown cake.

I will have to suck this up. The things we do for art.

ps. Amber and I were just discussing class and preparations for next week. I informed her that we get a certificate of completion at course end. She was so excited she had to take a moment. ha ha..This is why I love her. <3

Cake Decor..

I forgot to mention my exciting news! Tonight is my first Cake class with Amber!

We have purchased our notebooks and are ready for our first session. There is a big break in between work and the start of class so I think we may hit up some shoe stores and grab some grub prior. Should be a blast. Amber and I always spice it up. So excited!


Party of Awkward..

Awkward situations over the weekend. I think it's my upbringing. Hubs family always throws big get togethers, family, friends and co-workers. I come from the school of thought you separate these folks when possible. Nothing good comes from this, aside from awkwardness.


Hubs has a close work mate that coaches with him on two different sports throughout the year (we will call him Mr. Coach). They have known each other and worked together for about four years or so. Due to this and the fact that this man's teenager just graduated from the High school they teach at we were promptly invited to a Graduation Celebration for the young chap. I am very fond of Mr. Coach and I have met his wifey a few times, she seems nice. Hubs wanted to attend because it was an obligatory "friend" thing amongst males I suppose. So I was required to do my wifely duty and tag along.

We arrived. It was an outside party. Family everywhere. Family and US. Eleven kinds of awkward I tell you. Hubs was slightly disheveled as well. He didn't know if we should sit, stand, find a table or eat. We were introduced from Mr. Coach to his parents, Mrs. Coach's parents, both appeared to be remarried so we met a total of 8 parents and various other relatives. We ended up sitting at a table to eat with Mrs. Coach's immediate family. Hubs got to talk to Mr. Coach for a few minutes. Minor work chitty chat and eventually Mrs. Coach came over to talk to us briefly but ended up getting into a trip down memory lane with Mom, Dad and Brudder.

The folks were very lovely people...all polite and the food was good but it was just a general feeling of awkwardness. Just me and Hubs at a picnic table. Talking to each other but not talking about the giant pink elephant in the room. I just don't get it. I mean it's not like we are being introduced in order to assimilated into the family. We will meet these folks once in a lifetime and there is all this history there and then us. The outsiders. The wierdo's that came to the family picnic.
It would have been less awkward if there were more than Hubs representing work. Then all the work folk could mingle. I seriously think it's upbringing but family and work friends were always separate islands. I mean I like the Coach Family but I don't want to get stuck sitting at a plastic picnic table talking to Great Grandma about Jesus and the size of women and young girls swim suits. I mean, I don't want to hang out with my crazy family I don't want to hang out with yours. I guess I just see it as: I don't want you to be uncomfortable and I am pretty damn sure you don't want to feel uncomfortable so lets just, Not. Works for me.

1. Most hated food: When Hubs fondues steak and shrimp. It's so greasy and the smell makes me sick.

2. Most hated person: Oooooooo Barracuda! *wink*

3. Most hated job: I hated my job when I worked for the state as a social worker for the mentally ill. I didn't like the heavy responsibility for other peoples lives. It was a lot of work, not enough success with your clients and a never ending battle. It shot my nerves to hell.

4. Most hated city: The District when my car is broken into.

5. Most hated band: Bee Gees, Jimmy Buffett are up there. Nickleback, Daughtry, Creed, need I go?

6. Most hated (non-blog) website: Perez Hilton's site.

7. Most hated TV program: The majority of reality telly. Anything on VH1-Rock of Love, Daisy of Love, New York, all of those Housewife shows: Real Housewives of whatever..who really cares?

8. Most hated politician: Can't say I hate any of them.

9. Most hated artist: I love all art. Even if it's not my bag, I still love the expression and emotion of it.

10. Most hated book: I don't really hate any books. I strongly disliked The Shack when I was reading. So much so that I actually stopped reading and have no desire to go back.

11. Most hated shop or store: Verizon store and/or any sports store where I am forced to wait around.

12. Most hated organization: Wow...I don't really have one

13. Most hated historical event: Wow this is debatable

14. Most hated sport: Watching tennis on telly. I love playing. Hate watching.

15. Most hated technology: Faxing. It's so unreliable and redick.

16. Most hated annual event: Thanksgiving/Christmas holiday. I hate the pressure involved to please everyone.

17. Most hated daily task: cleaning the litter boxes

18. Most hated comedian: Not a big fan of that big one...what's his name..Oh, Larry the cable man??

19. Most hated blog: The one that makes me furious yet I continue to read it.

20. Most hated song: Anything by the Bee Gees, Jimmy Buffett, ...see above..

Exhibit A Please

I already posted today but I had to post this because it is so insane. More proof of my clumsiness. Sometimes I amaze myself folks. Amber and I went to grab some lunch and were rushing into our building because it is raining cats and dogs outside. I was walking towards the curb in between two of my co-workers vehicles. For reasons unknown I magically propelled INTO a the parked vehicles side view mirror. I slammed my arm into it pretty hard. Hard enough to bruise.

This was all a random act of clumsiness. I wasn't avoiding anything I just do what I do. I randomly run into things. Hard. Including parked vehicles. Redick.

Few Things To Note This Friday...

The Rain.
-It has been raining for three days straight. It's not even like the sprinkled rain it's all out, open the gates of heaven and POUR-rain. I always snicker when people say: "I like the rain".
Really?
Ha..I don't mind the rain, I guess, when I am at home, on my sofa, reading a book to the sound of it. Or when I am trying to fall asleep and I can hear it tapping on my skylight. I do mind the rain when I:
number 1/a: have to go out in it and drive with a bunch of idiots who recieved their licenses as a prize from a Cracker Jack box.
number 2/b: It is paired with humidity, which makes for an interesting car ride of menopause
number 3/c: I can't figure out the right temperature to DEfrost my windshield
number 4/d: it gets all over my glasses from walking from car to destination and the contrary.
number 5/e: I have to blow dry my hair only to get it wet again. Frizz city.


The Cold War.
-There is a silent war betwixt a Busy Body at work and KC and I. We can call her Evil Number One (jim reference). I can't get into details here, nor do you, reader, really want to hear this anyway, but I will say KC got the greatest jab in yesterday. One of those comments that are made between two folks and it leaves the other one pondering: Was that an insult??? I am currently unaware if all parties involved are even aware of this silent war but it's definately there.



Let Them Eat Cake.
-After work I am excited because Amber and I are going over to our local A.C. Moore to sign up for cake decorating courses. We need to charter a ferry to get there with all of this rain. See Above ^
Our first class is this coming Monday night and I am hoping to go through all of the courses and I may already have a lady that is going to send clients my way. I would love to do party and wedding cakes on the side on the weekends. Hopefully everything will fall into place.


With this said I just hope this weekend is nice and relaxing and I hope to catch up on some sleep that I have been in serious, serious lack of these past two weeks. Happy Friday everyone.
